Star Gazing April 14, 2001

It’s like looking at a starry sky,
water ripples twinkling,
staring west toward late afternoon.
My whole body is joyful
having spent the last few hours
riding ferries past sea islands.
Sunny day,
puff ball clouds
hanging suspended, halfway.
Orcas welcoming, the boat slowed,
respecting,
tipping slightly, all passengers bunched starboard,
gawking,
giddy merriment wending its way through the lot.
Watching by window I realized,
“It’s a pod!” and dashed to front rail
to witness directly my first viewing,
ever,
of Puget Sound natives,
so excited I went the wrong way.
Should have gone astern
to prolong passing that marvelous group.
There is so much life here
my eyes are popping,
while neighbors are calmly reading books,
no doubt spoiled by frequent crossings.
Feel like laughing out loud.
